RBS to sponsor Telegraph's British Open golf coverage

LONDON - The Daily Telegraph has signed up the Royal Bank of Scotland to sponsor its coverage of the forthcoming British Open golf tournament in a six-figure deal.

The newspaper has signed the legendary US golfer Jack Nicklaus to write editorial comment and analysis on The Open, which begins tomorrow. The Telegraph is planning a week-long period of activity to mark the event, to be held at the Royal St George's in Sandwich, England.

The Telegraph will publish an eight-page supplement to coincide with the start of The Open, and coverage of the event will also be available on -- including the Telegraph's Shot of the Day feature.

The deal was put together by James Mann, strategic planner in the commercial development department at the Telegraph Group, and negotiated by RBS's media agency MediaCom, and the sports marketing agency IMG.

According to Mann: "The creative flexibility that the Telegraph could offer will allow the package to run in-paper and online. The addition of exclusive content by Jack Niklaus provides a perfect platform for the Royal Bank of Scotland to exploit its sponsorship of The Open."

The Royal Bank of Scotland is also a patron of The Open.
