LONDON - The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is to halve its funding of British sport by the end of 2010 as a result of the global economic crisis.

The bank will end its sponsorship of the Williams Formula One motor-racing team at the end of next year when its current contract expires. It also plans to review its ties with sports stars such as British tennis player Andy Murray, Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and golfer Jack Nicklaus.

RBS has also backed sports such as golf and baseball and recently extended its sponsorship of the Six Nations rugby union championship for a further four years in a deal worth £20m.

The bank is expected to announce losses of up to £28bn today and the reviewing of its sponsorship activity is part of its strategic review.

Formula One is already having a tough time in terms of sponsorship; Honda has already withdrawn from the sport and Renault will lose its main sponsor, ING, from 2010.
