Rajar Q2 2015: Commercial radio posts stronger increases than BBC

BBC radio posts another increase in its overall weekly audience reach in the second quarter of the year but commercial radio stations report stronger increases.

In today’s Rajar listening figures, weekly audience figures for the BBC radio stations hit 35 million, a 0.4 per cent rise quarter on quarter, but a 0.6 per cent drop compared with the same period last year.

BBC Radio 1’s reach fell 3.3 per cent year on- year, but rose 7.6 per cent quarter on quarter, to 10.4 million.

BBC Radio 2 continues to have more listeners at 15.1 million. Its reach dropped 2.3 per cent year on year, and increased 0.4 per cent quarter on quarter.

BBC Radio 4 remained the second most popular of the Corporation's stations with 10.6 million weekly listeners on average, a 0.4 per cent rise year on year.

Of the DAB channels, BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra saw the greatest increase in number of listeners of 76.8 per cent year compared with the same period last year. BBC Radio 4 Extra also saw a 24.5 per cent year on year audience rise.

Commercial radio stations pulled in 34.6 million weekly listeners on average in the second quarter of 2015. This equates to a 0.6 per cent increase year on year, and a 2.1 per cent quarter on quarter increase.

Listeners for Heart dropped 2.3 per cent, year on year, to 8.7 million. Capital fell 2.6 per cent, and Classic’s reach fell 3 per cent.

Kisstory, the Bauer Media station’s spin off for Kiss, saw a 32.9 per cent rise in average weekly listeners year on year, and a 29 per cent increase quarter on quarter.
