According to Rajar's Q3 data, 28.7% of those aged 15+ claim to live in a household which has a DAB receiver - an increase of 32% year on year from 21.7% in Q3 2007.
At a time when Channel 4's withdrawal from the planned second commercial digital radio multiplex has potentially damaged the appeal of DAB, the latest Rajar figures will come as a boost to digital radio.
Combined, radio listening via all digital platforms increased both year on year and quarter on quarter. In Q3, 18.7% of all radio listening was done via a digital platform, up from 15% in Q3 2007. DAB listening accounted for 11.3% of all radio listening, up from 8.6% in Q3 2007, while digital TV accounted for 3.2% of all radio listening and the Internet accounted for 2.2%, up from 1.6% in Q3 2007.
The level of radio listening via all digital platforms each week has remained constant at almost one third of the population quarter on quarter (31.4% in Q3 2008 versus 31% in Q2 2008) and is up from 28.4% in Q3 2007. This is reflected in the digital listening hours for Q3, 2008, which stand at 188 million hours per week, an increase of 6 million hours per week on Q2 2008.
Radio listening via mobile phone is also rising steadily. The number of adults (15+) who claim to have listened to the radio via a mobile phone has increased from 9.2% in Q3, 2007 to 12.7% in Q3, 2008.
Overall, combining both analogue and digital radio, radio listening remained stable at 45.08 million listeners per week in Q3 2008, representing 89% of those aged 15+. This compares to 45.12m in Q2 2008.
