Tabor, talking at this week's Radio Festival, said: "I want to put that one to bed. We haven't had any conversations with Chris about joining us. If you look at what we did with Heart – Emma Bunton and Jason Donovan, they are people who have not done radio before and we are bringing them into the sector. That is more our strategy at Global."

This week the annual Radio Festival, run by the Radio Academy, took place in Salford and was attended by hundreds of industry figures including Andrew Harrison, chief executive of RadioCentre and BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans.

One of the biggest issues in the industry is the planned switch from analogue to DAB. On Tuesday Ed Vaizey, minister for culture, communications and the creative industries, indicated he expected the BBC to help pay for the roll out of DAB.

He said: "The BBC has to work with me on coverage. I am talking to the BBC and I hope to accelerate the pace of digital radio coverage."

Ford Ennals, chief executive of Digital Radio UK, the body funded by the industry to help prepare for switchover, told the Radio Festival that there will be a new cross-industry campaign, which will carry the tagline "Digital radio, more to love".
