Radio 1 signs Vernon Kay to complete weekend line-up

LONDON - BBC Radio 1 has signed Vernon Kay, the presenter of Channel 4's youth strand 'T4', as the final part of its weekend line-up.

From January 2004, Kay will front the Sunday 3pm-4pm slot, presenting a show covering the week's entertainment and showbusiness news, with Kay giving his own particular take on the trials and tribulations of celebrities.

Kay was also the presenter of the Channel 4 attempt to do a Saturday night entertainment show 'Boys & Girls', which bombed in the ratings and was quickly axed.

Andy Parfitt, controller of Radio 1, said: "Vernon is a magnetic presenter who'll be bringing a massive dose of energy to the Sunday afternoon show. He's a big music fan and it's great to have him on the team."

The appointment of Kay comes after Radio 1 revealed plans for a brand new weekend line-up, which began on September 20.

The new weekend line-up begins with the Dreem Teem's Spoony presenting 'Weekend Breakfast' on Saturday and Sunday at 7am-10am, followed by Colin Murray and Edith Bowman on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-1pm.

"I am thrilled and overjoyed to be joining such a great station and team at Radio 1," Kay said.

Prior to hosting T4, Kay was one of the presenters on 'Live and Kicking' along with model/presenter Kate Heavenor. Before that, Kay was a presenter on the now-defunct digital channel Play UK.
