Hughes is chairman of association Eventia and managing partner of business consultancy MCHA. Until March, he was the director of live events for the Central Office of Information.
Ernest Vincent, chief executive of the QEIICC, said: "We are delighted to welcome Simon to the QEIICC as a non-executive director. He will bring a wealth of experience of live events to the centre at a time when we are exploring new avenues for growth.
"The role of The QEIICC non-executive directors is to bring experience and knowledge to the centre as well as being an independent challenge to the executive team," he added.
Hughes said: "Having delivered lots of events at the QEIICC over the years, I have a real insight into both the opportunities and challenges that it faces at the moment."
Hughes’ appointment will take effect next month.
