Puma to launch footwear designed by Philippe Starck

LONDON - Philippe Starck, the designer best known for his pared-back interiors such as the St Martin's Lane Hotel, is creating a range of footwear for sports brand Puma, which promises to be 'modern and minimalist'.

Puma says that the footwear collection, to appear in autumn this year, will be evolutionary and strikingly modern.

"I have been interested in venturing into the world of footwear for 12 years and have finally found the right partner in Puma," Starck said. "The collaborative effort results in a collection of footwear that is modern and minimalist, with the philosophy that less is more."

Starck has left his mark on design in almost every aspect of life, from interiors of hotels in major cities, including the Hudson in New York and the Delano in Miami, to orange juice squeezers, bins and packaging for food.

Antonio Bertone, director of global brand management for Puma, said: "Philippe Starck is known mostly for his work within the worlds of architecture and interiors. Starck brought this design sensibility to Puma's fashion and sport product for this collection. The partnership did not happen overnight, it was something that we spent two years putting together so we could get it right."

The collection has been presented in Florence and more details will be released in spring.
