Public can vote online for BBC Book of the Future

LONDON - The BBC is calling on the public to vote online for a selection of articles to be published in a book in aid of Comic Relief with contributions from the likes of 'Trainspotting' novelist Irvine Welsh.

The book, which the BBC is calling the UK's first democratically edited book, will be published in July 2003 and is called the 'Book of the Future', a series of 100 visions of what life will be like in 2020.

The public is being invited to both submit their visions of life at the , as well as respond to other articles already on the site.

The articles receiving the highest rating will appear in print, and proceeds from the book will go to Comic Relief. Other contributing to the 'Book of the Future' include film director Mike Leigh and socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

Ashley Highfield, director of BBC new media and technology, said: "'Book of the Future' is the BBC of the future, where we encourage the audience to participate, to write articles on the website, to vote on each other to help create our input.

"This book on the future of Britain, when published, will have articles by our audience set next to those by celebrities and experts: the first democratic book."
