PSB Special: What is PSB?

Media Week explains the key facts

  • PSB is programming produced for the benefit of the public, rather than pure commercial reasons
  • The concept dates back to the early days of the BBC and is based on the notion that TV and radio should not be commercially controlled and should inform, educate and entertain all sections of society
  • The basic elements include impartial news, broadcasting free from political and commercial pressure, access to high-quality programmes across a range of broadcasters, catering for all sections of the community and accountable to the public
  • It typically includes news and current affairs and also children's, art and religious programming
  • Ofcom has held a review into the future of PSB, as the funding of such programmes through advertising is no longer sustainable, largely due to the advent of digital channels that provide advertisers with more choice
