Prowler revives Pink Paper and plans radical makeover

LONDON - The Pink Paper, the loss-making national free gay weekly closed down on October 1 by publisher PP&B, has been bought by Millivres Prowler Group, owner of Gay Times and Diva.

Millivres Prowler, which has been established for 30 years, has said it is committed to major, long-term investment in the Pink Paper, including a "radical" relaunch scheduled for early in the new year.

Prior to the relaunch, title will be published fortnightly and the next edition is due on November 5.

Tris Reid-Smith, who returns as editor, said: "Everyone was shocked and disappointed by the Pink Paper's closure. It is as popular as ever -- all the copies we printed were picked up and people often complained there weren't enough available. Now the Millivres Prowler team's enthusiasm, professionalism and greater resources will make it a bigger financial success."

At the time the newspaper closed, the publisher said that revenues were being eaten away from online rivals such as and .

Simon Topham, managing director of Millivres Prowler, said: "Millivres Prowler is committed to high standards of independent gay and lesbian journalism and the Pink Paper will open an important new business for us in the free distribution market.

"The Pink will distribute 40,000 copies free in 500 venues around the country every fortnight and, while we initially intend to maintain continuity by keeping the current format, we are looking forward to planning major improvements in the future."

The Pink Paper was first launched in 1987 as a campaigning vehicle on gay-rights issues, and was distributed free to clubs and gay bars and health clinics.
