Propaganda makes bid for autonomy in Independent Films

The production company Propaganda/Satellite Films has changed its name to Independent Films as it attempts to distance itself from its former US parent, which folded in November.

The independently financed company continues to be run by Jani Guest and Richard Packer. However, it will no longer represent the US directors Spike Jonze, Dante Ariola, Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire.

They have signed with the US outfit Morton Jankel Zander for representation in the UK. MJZ is launching a London operation imminently which, it is believed, will be run by Debbie Turner, the former managing director of The Artists Company, which closed recently.

Guest confirmed: "We have passed them to MJZ in London."

In the past, Propaganda attempted to be independent by severing its ties with Academy Commercials to launch its own full-service operation - in which BRW Films took a majority stake - last June. Guest said: "When we decided to separate from Academy and grow we knew the success would boil down to having a good local roster and proving ourselves by building talent."

Independent has also set up an association with HKM and The Directors Bureau in Los Angeles for UK and European representation of their directors' portfolio, which includes names such as Sofia Coppola. Independent's roster of directors includes Brian Beletic, who directed the Bacardi ad with Vinnie Jones.
