Pot Noodle tops ITC's catalogue of ad complaints

A TV ad for Pot Noodle that described the product as the 'slag of all snacks' was the most complained about ad last year.

Three hundred and ten viewers complained to the Independent Television Commission (ITC) that the use of the term 'slag' was offensive.

The ITC upheld the complaints and Unilever Best Foods and its ad agency HHCL and Partners were told the word 'slag' was not acceptable.

BBH's 'cradle to grave' ad for Microsoft Xbox attracted complaints from 136 viewers that it was offensive and in bad taste.

The ad showed a baby being born, ageing rapidly as he travels through the air and crashing into a grave. The ITC ruled that the ad should not be re-shown in its current format.

An ad created by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO for the British Heart Foundation attracted 238 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) - the highest of 2002. It showed an elderly woman with a clear plastic bag over her head. The ASA ruled that the ad was in breach of the code because it might cause children to copy the behaviour.
