Post Office to take £12m business out of Publicis

The Post Office is calling a pitch for its £12m advertising account less than a year after reappointing Publicis to the business following a statutory review.

The latest review has been prompted by the arrival of marketing director Gary Hockey-Morley from Abbey last September, and managing director Alan Cook, who joined last March.

Hockey-Morley replaced Simon Carter, who appointed Publicis but then left to join Thomas Cook.

Cook handed Publicis a one-year contract following the statutory review; previously the business had run for five years. Publicis is not repitching. It is believed that the direct marketing account, held by Joshua, is unaffected.

The review comes as the Post Office carries out a major overhaul of branches. It has come under pressure recently following negative publicity surrounding government plans to close 2500 branches by 2009 in a bid to cut its subsidy.

The Post Office's recent ad strategy has focused on its animated 'Ants' characters, which have been used to sell the retailer's extended range of over-the-counter services and financial products.

The Post Office said it 'does not talk about its suppliers'.
