Portman selects ex-BOL.com man as top marketer

Portman Building Society has hired former BOL.com marketing chief Andrew McQueen as its first executive committee-level marketer.

He will join Portman, the UK's fourth-biggest building society, next month from investment bank Goldman Sachs, where he is marketing director for equities.

As strategic marketing director, McQueen will report to group development director Matthew Wyles and lead a 30-strong team. Portman created the role last September during a corporate restructure that saw the departure of Chris Cummings, marketing director for Sunbank, the specialist mortgage lender acquired by Portman in 2001. The Society chose to consolidate the marketing for the two operations, and Cummings accepted redundancy.

McQueen was global vice-president of marketing at BOL.com in 2001, until the e-tailer closed its international division. He was previously UK marketing and PR director at thestreet.co.uk.

He joins Portman at a rocky time; 700 members have signed a petition to oust chief executive Robert Sharpe, in response to his decision to close four rural branches.
