Plusnet radio ads banned for saying terms and conditions too quickly

Two radio ads by Plusnet have been banned after terms and conditions were read out too quickly to be understood.

The first of the ads, which were created by Karmarama, promotes Plusnet’s broadband service, which is available for £18 a month over 18 months, plus a £10 fee.

It ends with this 25-word disclaimer, crammed into five seconds: "Prices may change. 18 month contract. New customers in low-cost areas only. Traffic prioritisation applies. See plus.net/traffic. Terms apply."

The second ad, for the brand’s mobile tariffs, concluded: "Standard UK minutes and texts. Prices may change. Rolling monthly contract. Offer ends 14th of March. Terms apply. See Plus.net/mobile."

One person complained to the Advertising Standards Authority that the terms and conditions had been delivered too quickly. When contacted by the ASA, Plusnet said the terms had been presented as the pace they were spoken by the voiceover artist and had not been speeded up in post-production.

However, the ASA said the words in these terms and conditions were difficult to make out and were too quick to be understood – but that they contained "material information that consumers required in order to make an informed decision".

As a result, the watchdog found the ads breached the BCAP Code rules on misleading advertising and qualifications, and said they must not be used again in their current form.
