Pizza Hut aims to get youth voting as well as eating

NEW YORK - Pizza Hut is testing whether politics can sell pizza in a new campaign encouraging America's youth to use their vote in this year's Presidential race.

Stepping into the territory previously marked out by MTV, the Yum Brands!-owned chain is running TV ads featuring two college-age guys talking about the candidates rather than images of gooey mozzarella.

One complains that all the candidates are talking about change, but he'd like to have more change in his pocket. You can view the ad .

When the other tells him "I hear you -- I'm going to sit this election out", he says "C'mon man, you've got a voice, go use it."

Coincidentally both are chowing down on Pizza Hut's Pizza Mia $5 value pizza, although it is not referenced or specifically promoted in the ad.

The ad ends with a visual incorporating Pizza Hut's logo and the strapline "It's your choice, please vote". This is repeated with the phrase: "We're Pizza Hut and we've approved this ad."

Scott Bergren, president of Pizza Hut, said: "There's something about pizza and politics - they just go hand-in-hand."

The importance of the youth vote was underlined by the shock victory for Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the Iowa primary two weeks ago.

However, since then momentum has swung towards front-runner Hillary Clinton, who went on to win in New Hampshire and won again with a clear victory in Nevada this weekend. In the contest for the Republican nomination John McCain is on the up after victory in South Carolina.

Bergen said: "Today's youth have the power to change history with their vote in this Presidential elections. At a time when the number one issue in this election is the economy, we're using our new Pizza Mia ad to encourage everyone to vote and make sure their voice is heard."
