In pictures: SodaStream unveils sugar statues to combat sugary drinks

Sparkling water maker SodaStream unveiled statues made of sugar outside the Houses of Parliament yesterday (1 December) to illustrate the amount of sugar consumed through fizzy drinks in the UK.

The giant statues, which were created by food artist Jacqui Kelly, were made using the total amount of sugar from fizzy drinks consumed per minute by three different age groups.

The statue of a child was made using 44.5kg of sugar, while the teenager and adult statues utilised 158kg and 385kg respectively.

The stunt coincided with the latest report from the Commons’ Health Committee, which states there is "compelling evidence" that a tax on sugary drinks would reduce consumption. It took place a day ahead of Action on Sugar’s parliamentary reception.

SodaStream aims to highlight the importance of drinking water and cutting back on sugar intake by inviting consumers to take part in the #SugarSwapChallenge – swapping sugary fizzy drinks for sparkling water.
