Returning to the festive event for the second year, the 30-foot-high tree will be positioned by the River Thames until 23 December. Visitors have been invited by the two companies to write a message of love, hope or remembrance on a Christmas decoration in return for a small donation to Macmillan Cancer Support.

This year’s launch was hosted by model and Macmillan supporter Daisy Lowe. The X Factor band Only The Young also performed for the launch, joined by fellow competitor Lauren Platt who made a surprise appearance.

Devised by M&C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment, the campaign is also targeting those based outside London through a social campaign. Supporters have been encouraged to post their message on Twitter using the hashtag #TreeOfLight or by text to make a donation.

Messages submitted this way will appear on LED screens around the tree. NatWest branches in London and the south-east are also offering special decorations that their customers can take home to decorate their own trees.

Alix Wooding, head of corporate partnerships at Macmillan, said: "At Macmillan we know Christmas can be a difficult time of year for people affected by cancer, which is why our Tree of Light creates a setting where loved ones can be remembered and celebrated.

"We’re so grateful for the generosity of the general public and the amazing support of our partners NatWest and ambassador Daisy Lowe, who are helping us to reach even more people affected by cancer."

Phil Northey, NatWest managing director of London and the south-east, added: "I’m delighted NatWest have been able to support our partner Macmillan to light up London with messages of love this Christmas. I’d encourage everyone who can to pay a visit, and help raise funds for a fantastic cause that NatWest is proud to support."
