In pictures: KLM beagle guest stars at Sherlock launch

Dutch airline KLM's new mascot, Sherlock the beagle, was drafted in to greet guests to the Museum of London's new exhibition on Sherlock Holmes last night (16 October).

The dog, which has racked up over 12 million hits on YouTube for a stunt at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, has acquired a mass of global followers. He was accompanied at the event by a dog handler and KLM airhostess to celebrate his namesake and promote the airline’s Lost & Found service.

Guests could grab a photo with Sherlock before heading to the main event. The launch of the Sherlock Holmes exhibition attracted approximately 1,000 visitors, including actors Sir Ian McKellen, Natalie Dormer and Steven Berkoff.

Staff at the museum were dressed up in deerstalker hats and other Victorian costume to guide guests through the new exhibition. The immersive show, which will be available to visit until April 2015, aims to recreate the atmosphere of Sherlock’s London through early film, photography, paintings and original artefacts.

An event series has also been curated to complement the exhibition. New Sherlock Holmes author Anthony Horowitz will be in conversation with Clare Pettitt, professor of Victorian literature and culture and Alex Werner, chief curator of the Sherlock exhibition later this month.

Other events planned include ‘The case of the curious cocktail’, a cocktail-making hunt that will take place in the galleries after dark, a walking tour around Sherlock’s London and an after-hours gallery viewing featuring live performances and workshops.
