Photo-message offerings fail to excite UK public

The mobile phone industry is facing a huge task to convince consumers of the benefits of picture messaging, despite the fact that all four major networks are currently advertising these services.

According to research conducted for Marketing by OMD Snapshots, 80% of the 1306 respondents questioned would not send any pictures from their phones. Worse still, two-thirds (67%) would not be prepared to pay more than 20p per message.

The networks currently charge a pay-as-you-go rate of 35p to 40p while T-Mobile charges the lowest pre-pay rate of 拢10.50 for 50 messages a month, working out at 21p a message on the presumption that customers use up their entire monthly allowance. Respondents identified taking photos of family and friends as prime uses for the medium.
