Phoenixing companies could be blacklisted says Downie

Event industry organisations should consider blacklisting companies that phoenix, according to Eventia CEO Izania Downie.

Downie said that although phoenixing is "okay in some cases" in most instances it should be banned, and that the Eventia board would look at any member that phoenixes and consider its future.

"When companies constantly do it [phoenix] it ruins the professionalism of the industry," she added. "It's an industry full of SMEs, actions like this can have a massive knock-on effect."

Downie said that she has experiences of some agencies that have been forced to phoenix through no fault of their own, and that explained correctly it can get the support of the industry. But for those that cannot explain their actions are for the good of the industry, sanctions could be applied.

"We've not had any members phoenix yet," said Downie. "But we could share information on those that do with other industry associations and clamp down on this practice."
