PHD to handle Irn-Bru and Tizer in £3.5m Barr win

LONDON - Barr Soft Drinks, makers of Irn-Bru, has handed its £3.5m media buying account to PHD, following a three-way pitch.

PHD won the business after going up against BLM Media and Feather Brooksbank. Incumbent agency Mediaegde:cia did not take part in the pitch, which was handled by Billetts Media Consulting.

Omnicom Group-owned PHD will now look after brands including Irn-Bru, Orangina and Tizer. Work begins immediately, with Laura James as the media director.

Nigel Dugdale, Barr group marketing manager, said: "We are entering an exciting phase in the ongoing development of Irn-Bru and the appointment of PHD will add to our focus and enhance our media resources."

The Irn-Bru advertising account remains with the Leith Agency and the Tizer account with BDH\TBWA. One of the ads created by Leith for Irn-Bru, telling goths to "cheer up", received complaints from goths who said that youths were throwing cans of the fizzy pop at them in response to the ad.

Irn-Bru is traditionally most popular in Scotland, but during the first half of 2002, sales of the drink rose by 22% in England and Wales, in response to a marketing push by AG Barr.
