Pete Doherty in attempt to stop Channel 4 heroin documentary

LONDON - Former Libertines and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty is trying to stop Channel 4 broadcasting a documentary that shows him smoking heroin.

The behind-the-scenes documentary shows Doherty, while he was still frontman for The Libertines, on a UK tour smoking heroin off tinfoil.

The film is made by documentary film-maker Max Carlish, who previously made a Bafta-awarding winning film about the Royal Opera House.

The Channel 4 documentary is the result of months of work on Carlish's behalf, after he followed the former Libertines singer, and now boyfriend of model Kate Moss, around.

Doherty is trying to get the footage banned because he says it is owned by his management company.

Carlish and Doherty fell out spectacularly fell out earlier this year when Doherty hit the film-maker in a London hotel on February 2 after a night of drinking.

The fight led to the singer spending four days in Pentonville Prision in London. He was initially charged with robbery and blackmail, but these were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service last month.

Carlish spent five months filming Doherty from June to October 2004, shooting him at nine gigs over that period of time.

The pictures first appeared in the Sunday Mirror after Carlish sold them to the paper after falling out with Doherty.

Carlish told The Guardian recently: "A friend of mine saw the footage of him taking him heroin and thought I could sell them and recoup my losses. He called a friend at The Sun, and before I knew it I was in the middle of a bidding war.

"I was desperate for money, and by this point I had convinced myself I would never see Pete again, would never be able to complete my film."

The film is due to be shown on Channel 4 next month.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: "We are confident that the broadcast will go ahead."
