More people watching digital than tuning into BBC One

LONDON - Digital television is being watched by more people than either BBC One or ITV1 for the first time, according to the media regulator Ofcom.

The regulator reports today that over the second quarter of the year, viewing figures for digital exceeded that of the two main terrestrial broadcasters, although it concedes that ITV1 and BBC One still dominate in peak-time viewing.

According to Ofcom, which has published its quarterly report into the communications market today, BBC Two has been hardest hit by the growth of digital, with more than half of multichannel homes in the UK only spending 15 minutes a week watching BBC Two in June this year.

The report says that digital television now reaches 55% of homes in the UK, with 400,000 people taking up the Freeview service in the second quarter of the year.

Things are only set to get more difficult for terrestrial broadcasters, with Sky and Telewest both pushing for digital subscribers with cut-price starter packs to encourage people to sign up, and Freeview set-top box prices continuing to fall.
