Penguin shifts imprint catalogues online away from print

LONDON - Penguin has ditched its bi-annual printed catalogues in favour of online versions.

Now, the Penguin General Books, Penguin Press and Puffin divisions of the publishing house will announce forthcoming titles online.

Two URLs, and will provide access to the website developed by interactive marketing agency Dowcarter, which contains three, catalogues for each of the divisions. There will be links to the site from the main .

Penguin hopes the online catalogue will have greater reach, and will be regularly updated with the latest information.

Users can select individual titles, compile their own catalogue to view or print. The site is integrated with the Penguin database so that publication dates, prices, formats and jackets are kept up to date. The catalogue has been designed to be downloadable.

Joanna Prior, publicity and marketing director at Penguin, said: "Our printed catalogues were becoming a less useful and less accurate way of communicating information about our forthcoming titles. They were out-of-date as soon as they arrived back from the printer and there was no way to add in new titles that had come late to the schedule."

She explained: "We all feel that this new site is a brilliant showcase for our new season's lists and has the potential to generate excitement and interest in our books amongst a larger audience than ever before."

The publishers is promoting the site through postcards mailed to press and key contacts and is not carrying out online marketing.
