The statement comes after Bloomberg reported on 20 July that Pearson was exploring a sale of the group containing the Financial Times newspaper in a deal that could value the group at £1 billion.

A spokesperson for Pearson said: "Pearson notes recent press speculation and confirms that it is in advanced discussions regarding the potential disposal of FT Group although there is no certainty that the discussions will lead to a transaction.

"A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate."

Pearson is one of the world’s largest educational publishers, bringing in around £5 billion in annual revenue. It has owned the Financial Times for 60 years.
