Pearson chief Scardino is made a Dame

LONDON - Marjorie Scardino, chief executive of Pearson, is to become a Dame at a ceremony due to take place at Buckingham Palace later today.

Officially, she will become a Dame Commander of the British Empire for services to the media industry. She is widely seen as being responsible for turning around the fortunes of the Financial Times-owning Pearson.

Scardino, an American, is able to take up the honour after she took up British citizenship earlier this year and she will become the first Dame to head a FTSE 100 company.

She follows in the footsteps of other foreign media chiefs, most notably Hollinger chairman Conrad Black, who is a Canadian and was made a Lord after taking British citizenship, and Sir Tony O'Reilly, the former Heinz boss and owner of Independent News & Media, who is Irish.

Scardino will join more than 120 people at a ceremony, which will include former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who is to become an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire. The other people being honoured were revealed in the New Year's Honours List or the Queen's Birthday Honours last year.

Others being honoured include Deryck Maughan, the Citigroup vice-chairman, who is being knighted for services to British business in the US.
