Paris Match could be set for London

LONDON - Paris Match, the French magazine famous for breaking the Fergie 'Toe-gate' story, could be set to launch a UK edition as part of Hachette's plans to expand its British operations.

Weekly magazine Paris Match has a circulation of more than 470,000 in France, and Hachette is reported to be looking at whether its unusual mix of celebrity news and serious reportage could take on the likes of Now, Hello!, OK! and Heat.

The market is geting increasingly competitive -- last week Emap launched its latest celebrity magazine Closer.

Hachette took over the UK publisher Attic Futura in August as part of a £40m deal, with former Emap chief executive Kevin Hand at the helm. As well as taking over the titles it formerly published in conjunction with Emap, such as Elle, it is also looking at launching new titles here.

In an interview last week, UK managing director Vivien Cotterill, who helped launch Hello! magazine, said that a UK version of Paris Match could be one of the options in its expansion.

Paris Match combines elements of Hello! magazine, with celebrities giving the title access to private pictures, with the seriousness of Time magazine. As well as being the first publication to carry pictures of Sarah Ferguson having her toe sucked in a swimming pool by a Texan millionaire, it has also broken stories such as Francois Mitterand's love child.
