Panasonic launches web-based photo awards to push camera

Panasonic is using the web to launch a pan-European photography award scheme, designed to promote its soon-to-be released digital camera Lumix.

The Lumix Awards, which will kick off in the next few weeks, will be promoted online for six months on the Panasonic web site and via partnerships with major portals.

Successful entrants' photos will be featured in an online gallery on a Lumix microsite (www.panasonic-europe.com/lumix) designed by de-construct, the new-media agency formed by ex-Deepend staff.

"Panasonic wanted to create a new brand from scratch, rather than sponsor existing awards,

said Dan Douglas, business development director at de-construct. "The categories will be lifestyle-focused, to give the brand a bit of attitude."

Visitors will be able to vote for the winners online over a three-month period. Entrants can encourage their friends to vote by sending them a branded email including their photo.

To kick-start the promotion, Lumix cameras have been given to people in London, Berlin Rome and Paris. Their photo-diaries will be posted on the site to coincide with the launch of the cameras.

"Our hope is that the Lumix Awards will grow across Europe and be recognised as the leading award for digital photography,

said Paul Williams, ad manager at Panasonic Europe.
