The appointment is part of the strategy by Pact, Channel 4 and the BBC to boost diversity in the production sector.

She will offer advice to production companies on developing their approach to diversity, ranging from recruitment of staff to casting and developing company diversity policies and training.

Chan will work closely with Pact, the BBC and Channel 4 and other broadcasters belonging to the Cultural Diversity Network, which aims to improve multicultural representation both on and off-screen.

Before taking up the diversity adviser post, she worked as a freelance diverse talent consultant for BBC Vision, the division of the BBC responsible for its TV channels, where she helped to spot production and presenter talent from diverse backgrounds.

Channel 4 and the BBC are providing financial and strategic support for the initiative, which was welcomed by Bella Lambourne, director of HR at Endemol and the diversity representative on the Pact council. She said it was crucial to the success of the initiative that commissioners supported it.
