Orange outlines 3G mobile phone content strategy

Orange is to develop branded film and music programming in the hope of establishing itself as the leading provider of mobile entertainment.

The mobile operator has appointed Stream, TBWA/ London's content business, to develop a programming strategy and create film concepts for the mobile phone brand.

These will then be screened on 3G phones, when Orange launches its next-generation mobile service across Europe.

This is expected to happen later this year to match the activity of rivals Vodafone, T-Mobile and mmO2.

Orange is also believed to be considering TV formats for the venture, which will look to build on its sponsorship of events such as the London Film Festival and the Orange Book Prize.

Orange would not confirm the tie-up with Stream, but is keen to expand its brand beyond mobile phones and into programming and entertainment.

In recent months, it has been talking to content owners, including film studios and record labels, about licensing content for its mobile devices and for TV programming.
