Olympic gold medallist Pinsent appears in MG Rover ad

LONDON - Three times Olympic gold medallist rower Matthew Pinsent is the star of a new advertising campaign for MG Rover pushing the company's 'Three Years of Freedom' warranty deal.

The new campaign promotes two marques, Rover and MG. It was created by the West Midlands-based agency Cogent. It breaks this week and is one of several new marketing initiatives by the car maker.

Three Years of Freedom is MG Rover's product that promises new car purchasers three years' servicing, three years' warranty and three years' roadside assistance.

The ad plays on the number three, which is also the number of gold medals that Pinsent has won for rowing in the Olympics. Pinsent says in the ad "Three is my lucky number" and the screen then splits to show the various Rover and MG cars to which 'Three years of Freedom' applies.

MG Rover is the official car supplier to Team GB and Pinsent's involvement will last throughout 2004, including the Athens Olympics.

Pinsent said: "I'm delighted to be promoting the MG Rover's 'Three Years of Freedom' offer. Rover is a British company and the official car supplier to Team GB. I recognise the importance this makes to the British Olympic Association and athletes in the build-up to the Athens Olympics in August."

Pinsent will also appear at next month's Geneva Motor Show when the company will reveal the 2004 model Rover 75 and MG ZT product range.

The unveiling of the ad came as Pinsent rocked the rowing world by saying he was switching with James Cracknell to a coxless four, leaving two other rowers off the team.

The ad will run for several weeks with media planning and buying through ZenithOptimedia.
