Now and OK! continue to dominate celebrity titles

LONDON - The celebrity weekly sector was dominated by IPC Media's Now, which has maintained its dominance over Emap's Heat, while in the more mature end of the market OK! extended its lead over Hello!.

Now proved that it has not been hurt by the launch of rivals such as Heat's sister title Closer, which will not post an ABC until next period, as the IPC weekly romped past the 600,000 mark to 630,212, a period-on-period increase of 10.5%, up 14% year on year.

Heat was up 15.8% on last period and 56.1% year on year to 554,644, showing that its growth is beginning to settle down.

OK's strategy of securing multimillion-pound celebrity exclusives is paying off with a 10% period-on-period increase to 632,791, a year-on-year jump of 30%. Its rival in the mature celebrity magazine market Hello, was up 5.6% period on period to 546,952, a year-on-year climb of 3.8%.

In the overall weekly women's magazine group H Bauer's Take a Break is unshakeable in the top spot, just about holding on to its 1.2m readers with a slight dip period on period of 0.2% to 1,204,577, a year on year increase of 4.9%.

In second place overall, IPC's Woman was up 1% period-on-period to 638,036, a year-on-year decline of 1.3%.

Woman's Weekly slipped 2.4% period on period to 486,149, a year-on-year drop of 3.6%, while its stablemate at IPC, Woman's Own, managed a 0.1% increase to 519,388, up 0.2% year on year.

Among the downmarket weeklies, H Bauer's Bella and The National Magazine Company's Best both fell. Bella was down 3.8% on last period to 427,885, down 8.8% on a year ago. Best fell 2% to 416,074, down 3.3% on a year ago after restating last period's ABC figures because the publisher infringed strict ABC bulk rules.
