Off the Fence - Will Bauer retain all of Emap Radio's assets?

NO - Mark Middlemas, Managing partner, Universal McCann

I would be surprised if Bauer didn't sell its non-core radio assets once it has got its feet under the table - why hold on to things that aren't any good for you? I expect Bauer to keep its high-value multimedia brands with radio assets, such as Kerrang! and Heat, which makes a lot more sense. Famous last words, but I hope that is what will happen. The acquisition will be successful, but not just for Bauer.

YES - Cathy Lowe, Head of radio, PHD

Bauer's purchase of Emap's consumer magazines and radio stations was a surprise move. Bauer is known in the UK as a magazine publisher. It does operate commercial radio stations overseas, but it has no UK broadcast experience. Bauer may sell on some of the radio assets if it is offered a good price, but it is likely to take some time assessing its portfolio before making such a decision.

NO - Gillean McLaren, Associate director/head of radio, MediaVest Manchester

Bauer would not have taken on these radio assets without having plans to develop the division. It's likely there will be some stations that don't fit moving forward. This is an opportunity for existing Emap bosses to review if stations that may not fit into current station groupings add anything to the portfolio. Modifications will not be immediate, but there will be changes.

YES - Jonathan Barrowman, Head of radio, Initiative

Until the deal is formalised, Bauer remains a dark horse, especially as it has little form in UK radio. In the short term, a disposal of assets would be a surprise move, given Emap's multimedia credentials, its healthy operating profit and its position as a strong number two in a radio market. But, in the mid-term, we can't rule out Bauer being tempted by offers for its radio assets.
