Ofcom starts work on children's TV review

LONDON - Ofcom is to begin its review of children's programming with a research project examining the factors likely to affect the future delivery of high quality, original children's content.

The review forms part of Ofcom's remit to report on the quality of public service broadcasting provided by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, S4C, Five and Teletext. It will publish its research in the summer.

The research will also focus on the current state of children's television and other children's media in the UK; the role of public service broadcasting in providing content to children; and relevant international perspectives or examples.

In November, Ofcom imposed a ban on high fat, salt and sugar food advertising around all programming appealing particularly to children under 16.

It calculated that this would cost the TV industry £39m in lost advertising revenues.
