Ofcom clears Mini naked fish slap ad after 40 complaints

LONDON - An ad for Mini where a naked man is slapped in the head with a fish has been cleared by Ofcom despite 40 complaints from members of the public mostly concerned that it might inspire violence from motorists.

The ad, which was created by WCRS, begins with a mock warning, stating: "This commercial for Mini contains scenes of extreme violence and has nudity from the very beginning. Viewers of a nervous disposition are asked to look away... now".

The ad then cuts to a shot of a middle-aged couple driving naked in their Mini. As they drive past another naked man one of them slaps him in the back of the head with a large dead fish for no apparent reason.

Some viewers complained about the nudity even though the spot contains no breast or genital shots. Other viewers were worried that it would encourage motorists to behave violently to other road users while five people worried that it had been screened during documentary on ITV about a fatal assault on a teenager.

But Ofcom cleared the ad, saying: "While we accept that there was no obvious justification in the advertisement for the slap, we believe it was sufficiently ridiculous and improbable to be copied."

The ad is part of Mini's "That was a Mini adventure" campaign.
