O'Brien increases stake in Independent to more than 7%

LONDON - Irish business entrepreneur Denis O'Brien has upped his share of Independent News & Media stock, to just over 7%, valuing his current stake at around €200m (£136m).

O'Brien notified IN&M on Friday about an interest he had in 55,836,855 ordinary shares of €4.30 each, representing about 7.28% of the total issued share capital of IN&M on that date.

Last month, O'Brien was reported to be considering doubling his stake in the company to around 10%. He first acquired a 3% stake in the group last year but upped that holding to 5% earlier this year.

The IN&M chief executive is billionaire Dr Anthony O'Reilly, who holds 28% of the group. He clashed with O'Brien in 2002 when he led a consortium that foiled O'Brien's attempt to buy Irish telecommunications company Eircom and take it private.

IN&M is the largest newspaper group in Ireland, valued at about €2.8bn.
