Users will be able to play draw-based lottery games via text message and the deal will enable lottery tickets to be bought via handsets for users across all UK mobile networks.
The new service will launch later this year following the final approval from the National Lottery Commission, and will be provided using O2's cross-network technology platform to carry texts from the mobile phone operators to Camelot's interactive service. The platform has already been used for shows such as 'Pop Idol' and 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?'.
Richard Hurd-Wood, Camelot's director of interactive, said: "The launch on mobiles later this year is part of Camelot's wider strategy to broaden access to National Lottery products and attract new players. We are delighted to be working with the O2 Interactive Products team to help us bring this service to mobile telephone users across the UK and, as a result, generate even more money for good causes."
Mark Nixon, head of strategic partners at O2, said: "Not only is it an innovative use of text messaging but it enables customers to use their mobiles to access services in a way that would have been unthinkable two years ago."
