Nurses challenge value of DoH ads

Members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will this week call for the government to scale back healthcare promotions and redirect the cash into patient care.

The RCN's annual Congress will debate whether the Department of Health's promotional campaigns are achieving value for money. The motion will argue that the money spent on a campaign to tackle AIDS showed 'limited evidence of success'.

The proposal, which will not be voted on, will call for a more targeted approach to promoting health by giving nurses a bigger role in providing information and support.

The debate comes amid mounting concern over the financial health of the NHS.
