Myers is the leading reporter on the Star's Bitches column, set up to compete with the Mirror's 3am Girls, which reports celebrity gossip, sightings and other minutae.
Myers will take over as group news editor on the magazine and its online offering NME.com.
"I'm looking forward to taking NME's news service on to even bigger and better things. I also can't wait to swap soap stars for guitars and get out to loads of gigs," Myers said.
The appointment comes as the weekly title for the alternative music scene boosts its editorial line-up in an attempt regain ground lost to Emap's Kerrang!, which overtook the NME for the first time in the ABC circulation figures at the start of this year.
In the last set of ABC figures for the January to June period, Kerrang put on 7,500 readers on the previous quarter to record an ABC of 83,988, a 60.2% increase year-on-year.
The NME was up by just 1,500 on the previous quarter to 72,057, a year on year climb of 2.7%.
Myers' appointment follows that of new NME editor Conor McNicholas who took over in June when he joined from IPC's dance music title Muzik.
According to McNicholas: "Mel is at the top of her field in delivering exciting entertainment news stories and her enthusiasm, knowledge, and reputation for going above and beyond the call of duty to get a story are well known."
Anthony Thornton, editor of NME.com, will expand his role to reviews editor of the paper once Myers is on board.
