Editor James Harding has told staff the plans to axe 100 editorial staff, who work full time and casual, on the quality newspaper.
The majority of the jobs to go will impact on casual staff, sources told Media Week.
The Times has around 700 editorial staff in total. Those impacted by the cuts will now go into a two-week consultation period.
It is expected that The Sunday Times will be hit by similar cuts to its headcount and Harding is also addressing its staff today.
Earlier this year, News International's former chief executive Rebekah Brooks told staff across departments – including editorial-that the publisher was looking to take significant costs out of the business.
According to its latest accounts, Times Newspapers halved its pre-tax losses to £45m in the year ending 27 June 2010.
