The appointment, effective from July, marks the first time that marketing has been represented on Next’s board since chief executive Simon Wolfson held a brand role in the 1990s.
Shields joined Next in 1985 as a sales assistant in a London store, before working her way up to store management. She was appointed sales director in 2000, responsible for all store operations and training, then took additional responsibility for retail marketing in 2006.
In 2010, Shields was appointed to her current role, adding Directory and on-line marketing to her remit.
