Newsquest staff opt for redundancy

More senior commercial staff at the Newsquest Herald & Times Glasgow office have opted for voluntary redundancy following last month's announcement that more than 60 jobs were to be cut.

General advertising manager Moira Read, supplements manager Daniel Evans and motors manager Johnathan Whelan are among the latest staff to take the redundancy package.

They join James Varcoe, the London-based national and regional sales director, Glasgow-based head of brand marketing Frances Cairney, and head of business development Sheila Mechan.

No announcement has been made about who will take on their responsibilities, but a restructure of the commercial division is expected within weeks.

The proposed staff cuts, which were announced in early February, were blamed on a "predicted downturn in the UK advertising market".

At the time, staff were told in an e-mail that because of a downturn in classified advertising, 65 jobs needed to go in sales and editorial from the newspaper and magazine divisions, and that workers had two weeks to apply for voluntary redundancy.

The e-mail added: "Our company has held off considering reductions in staffing for as long as possible, but must, reluctantly, restructure the underlying cost base to protect the future strength of the business."
