According to the latest round of Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) figures, The Guardian's circulation rose 1.61% to 230,108 in December, beating the rest of the quality market, which overall was down 1.01%.

The newspaper's December circulation figure will be all the more welcome to Guardian executives, as the paper's cover price was lifted by 20p only months ago.

The big fallers in December were The Sun, down 3.56% to 2,530,843 copies, Daily Star, down 3.56% to 616,498, and The Independent, which fell 6.51% to 119,551 copies.

Of The Guardian's quality rivals, The Daily Telegraph was down 1.28% to 587,040, while The Times fell 1.01% to 409,060 in the month.

Across the mid-market, the Daily Express nudged down 1.14% to 596,415, while the Daily Mail fell just 0.34% to 1,994,908.
