NEWSPAPER ABCs: Daily Mail and Express benefit from Diamond Jubilee

The Daily Mail and Daily Express both registered circulation bounces in June, as their considerable coverage of the Diamond Jubilee paid off.

The Daily Mail's coverage of the Queen's Jubilee included a dedicated supplement that was published the weekend after the celebrations, as well as plenty of coverage inside the paper itself.

Likewise, the Daily Express gave the Jubilee extensive coverage in June.

The Daily Mail reported an average circulation of 1,939,635 in June, up 0.44% on the previous month, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABCs) figures.

The Daily Express was up 0.77% on the previous month.

Both titles opted to preclude the sale of their newspapers on the Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday of the Jubilee.

The Times also enjoyed a hike in circulation in Jun, up 1.10%, with sources telling Media Week that The Times added around 120,000 to its average circulation on Monday, after it published a special souvenir edition for the Jubilee.

The Times, unlike the rest of the national newspaper market, chose only to add the Monday Bank Holiday sale, not the Tuesday Bank Holiday, to its overall average sale.

It is likely that the Bank Holiday Monday sale was far greater than the Tuesday.

ABC rules mean publishers can choose whether to add their Bank Holiday sales into their overall average.

There was little movement across the rest of the national newspaper daily market in June. The Daily Mirror was up in June on the previous month, outperforming the rest of the red-top market.
