NEWS: Vintage characters lend appeal to Switch poster push

Collett Dickenson Pearce is rolling out its second Switch poster assault

of the year, as part of the debit card’s pounds 2 million national

campaign, with two works that draw on the popularity of children’s TV

characters.

The first, ‘Queue, Queue, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb’,

features Trumpton’s firemen waiting behind a woman writing a cheque.

The second poster features Mr Benn with a chequebook in his hand. The

caption underneath reads: ‘‘It’s time to change Mr Benn,’ said the

Shopkeeper.’

The Mr Benn treatment was art directed by Sean Thompson and Guy Moore

and written by Ros Sinclair, while the Trumpton work was art directed by

Paul Sharp and written by Paul Turner. Both were shot by Tim O’Sullivan.

Four different posters will go up from early November, first on buses,

followed by Superlites and 48-sheet sites. All continue the ‘It’s time

to Switch’ theme.

Simon Myers, the deputy managing director of CDP, said: ‘The challenge

is to keep the campaign looking fresh.’

But he said that it was a coincidence that the two executions which made

it through the creative process were linked to cult TV shows.

CDP’s work for Switch has been shortlisted for an Institute of

Practitioners in Advertising effectiveness award.
