A Sun spokesman said costs of the daily three-hour radio show, which , "were not insignificant".
The show called itself "the home of free speech", in recognition of the fact that internet radio currently operates outside the remit of Ofcom’s regulatory control.
This perceived freedom was seized upon by SunTalk’s presenter, Gaunt, who was fired from his previous role at TalkSport for calling a local councillor a "Nazi".
A message on the SunTalk website today (16 July), states: "SunTalk is no longer live ... Thank you for listening over the last 18 months. Please continue to enjoy our podcasts."
News International made the headlines with its SunTalk brand extension and has received industry awards for its innovation.
The closure comes just two days after with Ofcom, a decision not said to have had any relevance to SunTalk's closure.
A News International spokesman added: "SunTalk was not part of our core publishing business and its costs could not be justified."
