Its parent company, News Corporation, is investing £600 million in three new printing plants in Enfield, Glasgow and Knowsley, near Liverpool.
Commercial and editorial teams will remain in Wapping, but the move toward modern printing facilities is expected to lead to the loss of up to 600 jobs from among News International's printing workforce.
The new presses, which will be installed over five years, will enable News International to provide colour on every page of its titles, which it claimed as a benefit to readers and advertisers.
News International has been considering the move for some time and, in January, promoted Clive Milner, the managing director of Times Newspapers, to the role of group managing director to lead the relocation project.
Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, explained: "At News Corporation, we have always been a long-term investor at the forefront of technological innovation. This exciting new project demonstrates again our commitment to the future of print."
News International said there would be no job losses for at least two years and that, where possible, losses would come from voluntary redundancies.
