News International husband and wife team Clive Milner and Camilla
Rhodes - the heads of News Group Newspapers and Times Newspapers
respectively - are to swap jobs.
From 10 December, Milner becomes managing director of Times Newspapers,
publisher of The Times and The Sunday Times, while Rhodes, who is due to
return from maternity leave, will fill his post as managing director of
News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun and News of the World. No
explanation has been given for the job swap.
Milner, who is also chairman of the Newspaper Publishers Association, is
expected to push through an extensive cost-cutting programme on The
Times and its Sunday sister paper.
Last month, 12 sales redundancies on the papers were announced, with
most of the job losses falling in classified. However, in the current ad
climate, industry observers are predicting a more radical round of cuts
that could see the exit of some of the paper's many weekend sections
dedicated to special interests.
Both Milner and Rhodes joined News International in sales at the start
of the 80s, and their promotions to management positions came in
tandem.
Milner started as a sales executive on The Times in 1981, before moving
to News Group to become general manager, and then managing director in
1999.
Rhodes joined News International in 1980 and has held ad director
positions at both News Group and Times Newspapers before becoming deputy
general manager of Times Newspapers in 1995. She was appointed managing
director in August 1999 on the same day her husband became managing
director of sister company News Group.
